Fatal accident with car claims life of man on scooter

People in Brevard County and throughout the state need to be on constant alert for vehicles on the road. This is especially true if they're pedestrians, bicyclists or riding a smaller vehicle like a scooter. While motor vehicle accidents are always dangerous, those who are more vulnerable stand a greater chance of being involved in a wrongful death incident. The unexpected loss of a loved one can have consequences that extend beyond the emotional devastation that results from an untimely death. There can be personal and financial considerations as well.

A 49-year-old man who was riding his scooter home after completing his shift as a hotel bellman was killed when he was hit by a car. The man was hit from behind by a 2013 Nissan Altima being driven by a 19-year-old man. According to the police investigation, the Altima did not slow down before hitting the scooter. The two vehicles caught fire after the crash. The driver of the Altima remained at the scene. The man who died had a wife, a 21-year-old daughter and a 15-year-old son.

While it might not be the first thing on a family's mind after a fatal accident in which they lost a loved one, financial issues and the future are always a concern. Insurers will commonly contact a family that is reeling from a loved one's unexpected death and try to negotiate a financial settlement to preclude a more costly legal filing. The family might unwittingly accept an offer without realizing that it's not likely to be sufficient to assist them for more than a short while, if at all. Prior to accepting a settlement, it's important that the family protect themselves and leave the door open to seek larger compensation.

In this case, the man was riding his scooter home from work when a car crashed into him. It led to his death. In situations like this, the victim's family needs to understand their rights and may want to explore the possibility of wrongful death litigation.
