How many fatalities result each year from boating accidents?

One of the greatest parts about living in Florida is one's ease of access to the water. With its coast hugged by the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the waves of the Atlantic Ocean, the state is a fantastic place for serious boaters and recreational watercraft users to enjoy time outdoors. While most individuals fare well when they take to the lakes, rivers, and bigger bodies of water in and near the state, others find themselves involved in sometimes dangerous boating accidents that put their lives at risk.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, in 2013, 51 people died while on the water in the state. California, the state with the next highest number of boating accident fatalities during that year, recorded 34 deaths. Texas, South Carolina and Michigan rounded out the remainder of the top five states ranked on number of boating deaths for 2013.

A fatal boat accident can happen in any number of ways. Pure accidents and vehicle malfunctions may account for some boating deaths; the negligence and recklessness of others out on the water also lead to accidents that claim lives. Drunk driving and those who do not follow the rules of the water often put innocent and responsible boaters in danger with their unpredictable and hazardous actions.

As with any other accident that leads to a personal injury, a boat accident can result in a victim missing time from work, incurring costs for medical treatment, and in some cases paying the ultimate price with their life. Florida leads the nation in boating accident fatalities and as a result, some Florida families have had to learn to cope without their loved ones in their lives. Legal claims based on wrongful death and personal injury law may be available to people who wish to pursue action against those who caused the death of a loved one.
